BELGRADE STRIKES BACK: PRESIDENT VUČIĆ RESPONDS TO CRITICISM OVER ZELENSKY VISIT

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić fired back at his critics earlier today, addressing the backlash he faced after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Belgrade last week. In a scathing response, Vučić rejected allegations that Serbia is shifting its stance on the Ukraine-Russia conflict or becoming increasingly close to Moscow.

The president’s comments were in response to claims made by his domestic opponents that he is driving Serbia towards Russian interests. Vučić dismissed this notion, emphasizing his long-standing commitment to Serbia’s sovereignty and independence.

“We haven’t gone anywhere,” Vučić said. “I have invested my entire life and fought my entire life for Serbia to lead a sovereign and independent policy.” The president argued that his opponents were fixated on finding fault in Serbia’s position, rather than engaging with his message or listening to his diplomatic efforts.

The Ukrainian president’s visit to Belgrade on August 3 sparked controversy back home in Ukraine and beyond. Zelensky was met with protests in the capital, with some critics accusing Vučić of pandering to Russian interests. Vučić countered that Zelensky’s visit represented a genuine opportunity for dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.

However, the president’s domestic critics continued to express their discontent. Vučić fired back at these critics, suggesting that they were motivated by a desire to undermine his leadership and launch a “brutal and senseless campaign” against Serbia.

One particular point of contention is Serbia’s position on sanctions imposed on Russia in response to the conflict in Ukraine. Vučić emphasized that Serbia has not imposed any sanctions on Russia, despite its close ties with the Russian Federation. The Serbian president questioned what, if anything, his country had gained or lost by not imposing these sanctions.

“Tell me exactly, did we impose sanctions on Russia? What did we lose?” Vučić asked, in a rhetorical flourish meant to highlight the limited impact of his country’s stance on the conflict.

The backlash Vučić faced is the result of an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, with Serbia finding itself caught in the midst of rival blocs vying for influence in the region. Despite this, the president’s response indicates that Serbia remains committed to maintaining its independence and sovereignty in the face of external pressures.
