The plan also includes the launch of new visa policies to make it easier for international visitors to enter the kingdom. Tourists will be able to obtain electronic visas upon arrival, eliminating the need for pre-approval from the Saudi government. Additionally, the government will introduce flexible visa categories, catering to different types of visitors, from business travelers to family vacationers.
Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb emphasized the importance of the tourism sector in creating jobs and stimulating economic growth in various regions of the kingdom. He stated that the industry is poised to become a significant contributor to Saudi Arabia’s GDP, rivaling the energy sector.
The Saudi government has already begun implementing key projects under the development plan. In AlUla, work is underway on the Royal Commission for AlUla’s ambitious $15-billion master plan, which includes the restoration of ancient sites, the construction of luxury resorts, and the development of hiking trails and other outdoor activities.
While critics have raised concerns about the environmental and cultural impact of the development plan, the Saudi government emphasizes that it has put in place strict measures to ensure sustainable tourism practices. A national tourism strategy is being developed to balance economic growth with environmental protection and cultural preservation.
