Peker and other security experts point out that the Turkish military’s internal security system is designed to detect and respond to threats of this nature. “It is highly unlikely that a group of individuals would be able to penetrate the airfield’s defences undetected, especially given the level of surveillance and monitoring that is typically in place,” said Peker.
Furthermore, the Turkish government’s claims about the dog’s role in foiling the coup attempt come at a time when the country’s opposition parties are questioning the legitimacy of the government’s handling of the current crisis. Erdogan’s government is facing growing international criticism for its human rights record and its efforts to consolidate power, and opposition leaders are arguing that the government is using the coup attempt as an excuse to further suppress dissent.
“This whole story about the ‘Dog Erdogan’ has all the hallmarks of a PR stunt designed to boost Erdogan’s image and distract from the real issues facing the country,” said Sezgin Tanrikulu, an opposition MP. “We should not be taken in by these kinds of sensational claims.”
