Ukraine’s military has claimed responsibility for a series of unprecedented drone strikes on key targets across Russia and occupied Ukrainian territory, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake. The overnight attacks, which were launched from the early hours of the morning, caught Russian forces off guard, with multiple objectives reported to be under assault from the unmanned aerial vehicles.
Among the targets hit by the drones was the Galaktika shopping center in Makiivka, a city in eastern Ukraine that was seized by Russian forces in 2014. The shopping center, which was formerly owned by the Ukrainian company Epicentr, caught fire after being struck by the unmanned aerial vehicles, with reports suggesting that multiple storeys were engulfed in flames.
Other key targets hit by the drones included the oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, a city in the Russian republic of Tatarstan, where the facility’s storage tanks were reportedly hit, causing significant damage and disruptions to oil production.
According to reports, 15 drones were shot down by Russian air defenses near Moscow, causing disruptions to airport operations and sparking panic among travelers. The drones had managed to penetrate the city’s airspace undetected, highlighting weaknesses in Russia’s air defense system.
Explosions and fires were also reported in several other key locations, including Sevastopol, the capital of the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and Kerch, a city on the Crimean-occupied peninsula. Multiple eyewitnesses reported hearing loud explosions and seeing flames engulf buildings in the areas hit by the drones.
Reports also suggested that drone strikes caused widespread power outages in several cities, including Melitopol, Berdyansk, and Donetsk, where the attacks left thousands without electricity. Ukrainian authorities have claimed that the drones were launched from Ukraine itself, and that the attacks were aimed at disrupting Russia’s supply chains and crippling its military industrial complex.
Russian forces have yet to comment on the scale of the damage, or the number of casualties, but officials have condemned the attacks, describing them as an act of “terror” against Russian civilians.
The overnight attacks have sparked a fierce debate in Western capitals, with some analysts hailing the strikes as a bold show of resistance by the Ukrainian government, while others have expressed concerns over the implications of Ukraine’s military actions on the international stage.
One thing is certain, however – the attacks have dealt a significant blow to Russia’s military, and demonstrate Ukraine’s capability to project power across its borders. The implications of these attacks will only grow clearer in the days and weeks to come, as the conflict in Ukraine continues to unfold on multiple fronts.
