Military Equipment Concerns Emerge as Drones Found Transferring Data to Chinese IP

Reports have emerged that surveillance drones deployed by Britain’s Special Boat Service have been found transmitting sensitive information to a Chinese IP address. The K3 Scout drones, which form part of a £12 million fleet supplied by the US-based Kraken Technology Group and have been in use by the Royal Marines since March, contain camera components manufactured in China.

According to sources, the drones transmitted “heartbeat communications,” which confirmed the devices were online. An investigation into the matter revealed that the transmission of this information occurred despite the fact that the drones were not actively engaged in an operation. Furthermore, the cameras on the drones reportedly remained active even when they were switched off.

This revelation has sparked concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain and has raised questions about the reliability of the components used in the drones. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has reportedly taken steps to address these concerns, with the Royal Marines grounding the drones pending an investigation into the matter.

The use of Chinese components in the drones has come at a sensitive time, with the Labour government facing criticism for its diplomatic relationship with Beijing. In recent months, the government has approved plans to expand the Chinese embassy in central London and has faced calls from opposition MPs to formally designate China as a threat.

MI5 warned Parliament last year that Chinese intelligence services were engaged in sustained efforts to influence and recruit British officials. The recent revelations have led the Conservatives to call for an urgent audit of military equipment for undisclosed Chinese components across the supply chain.

The deployment of the K3 Scout drones has also been linked to preparations for a British freedom of navigation package in the Strait of Hormuz. The drones were reportedly present during meetings between senior special forces staff, fuelling concerns that sensitive information may have been compromised.

The incident has highlighted the need for greater transparency and oversight in the procurement process for military equipment. As governments continue to rely on advanced technology to enhance their military capabilities, the risks associated with the use of foreign components in sensitive equipment must be carefully assessed to ensure the security of the nation.
