Russia has rejected assertions that high-level talks were held in Azerbaijan with German officials to discuss resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The denial was made despite Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev earlier confirming that a private “secret meeting” took place in the capital city of Baku.
In a statement, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin stated that there had been no formal diplomatic engagement with the German government in relation to the conflict. However, Galuzin acknowledged that informal discussions may have taken place between Russian and German individuals, describing these interactions as unofficial backchannel communications.
Rumors of the meeting in Baku emerged following reports of high-ranking officials from both countries gathering in the Azerbaijani capital. Although specifics of the private gathering were not publicly disclosed, diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict have continued with unofficial channels being employed extensively by diplomats and senior officials from both nations.
This is not the first indication of behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts focused on Ukraine. As fighting between Russia and Ukraine persists, diplomatic channels are increasingly being explored in order to find a resolution. Germany, traditionally an advocate for European peace and stability, has taken a leading role in facilitating unofficial talks aimed at a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
It remains unclear at this stage what specific topics were discussed during any unofficial meetings, or what impact they may have on efforts to find a lasting resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
