COLOMBIA ROCKED BY EARTHQUAKE, MILITARY INSTALLATIONS DAMAGED

A powerful earthquake struck Colombia early Sunday morning, leaving devastation in its wake and causing severe damage to military installations in Cali and Buenaventura. The quake, which measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, was felt across the country, with its epicenter located in the Valle del Cauca department.

According to eyewitness accounts, the earthquake’s severity was exacerbated by the region’s proximity to the Pacific coast, where the earth’s tectonic plates are in a state of constant movement. As a result, the impact was felt as far as 200 kilometers inland, causing widespread destruction and leaving residents shaken.

Footage shows the moment military installations belonging to the Colombian National Army in Cali and the Navy in Buenaventura were struck by the earthquake. In Cali, buildings were reduced to rubble, with debris scattered across the streets and rescue teams scrambling to reach people trapped under the wreckage. In Buenaventura, the Navy’s headquarters was heavily damaged, with reports indicating that the city’s port facilities were also severely affected.

Colombian authorities have confirmed that at least 20 people have been injured in the disaster, with two reported fatalities in the city of Cali. Rescue teams have been deployed to the affected areas, with local emergency services working tirelessly to assist those in need.

President Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences to the families of those affected and pledged the government’s support in relief efforts. “We are deeply saddened by the devastating impact of this earthquake on our fellow Colombians,” he said in a statement. “We will do everything in our power to provide assistance to those affected and support the recovery efforts.”

The earthquake has also prompted international aid to pour in, with neighboring countries offering assistance and support to the Colombian government. Regional experts have attributed the earthquake to the region’s tectonic activity, which has been increasing in recent years.

In the aftermath of the disaster, officials have been quick to emphasize the importance of disaster preparedness and the need for communities to be better equipped to cope with natural disasters. The government has vowed to implement measures aimed at mitigating the effects of future earthquakes and improving the country’s disaster response infrastructure.

As recovery efforts are underway, residents in the affected areas are coming to terms with the destruction caused by the earthquake. While the full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed, one thing is clear: the Colombian people will rally together to rebuild and support those affected by this devastating disaster.
