In a rare instance of secrecy surrounding presidential security arrangements, former US President Donald Trump was secretly switched from the Air Force One to a smaller C-32A military aircraft for his return flight from Turkey in July, the Washington Post has reported.
According to sources close to the White House, Trump’s decision to board the C-32A instead of the iconic Boeing 747-200B, formerly known as the Air Force One, was prompted by concerns over an alleged Iranian threat to the former president’s life.
White House officials had previously stated that Trump had flown back from Turkey on the former Air Force One, fueling speculation and criticism from opponents who accused the administration of withholding information from the public. However, in a move that suggests Trump’s personal security was taken extremely seriously, officials chose not to inform the media or all White House staff about the aircraft switch.
In a dramatic effort to avoid drawing attention to the change, Trump was reportedly moved from one aircraft to the other via an airport catering truck, an unassuming vehicle that passed unobserved by journalists and others who were following the president’s movements.
The Air Force One, also known as the ‘Vegas Nighthawk,’ is the official presidential aircraft used by American presidents for official trips. The 747-200B, which Trump used for the return flight, has been used by the military and private entities since its sale, with one aircraft famously being converted into a commercial airliner.
It’s worth noting that the security concerns driving the switch may have been genuine. The former US president’s return visit to Turkey followed the cancellation of a scheduled meeting between Erdogan and former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, amid reports that an Iranian intelligence team had been active in the region, attempting to target high-profile figures.
Although the Trump administration’s secrecy surrounding the aircraft switch has raised eyebrows, it’s not unexpected given the high stakes involved in presidential security. Trump’s security arrangements and those of other world leaders are typically shrouded in secrecy to avoid alerting potential threats.
This incident highlights the delicate balance between transparency and secrecy in high-stakes security situations.
