Located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil production is transported. The region has become increasingly volatile in recent years, with multiple incidents involving Iranian naval units and US military vessels.
Speaking to a group of media representatives, President Trump emphasized the strength and dominance of the US Navy. He stated, “Iran is going fine. Going just absolutely fine. We totally control the Strait of Hormuz. We have control over it. Nobody else. Only us. Our Navy is unbelievable. And things are going great for our country.”
However, President Trump’s assertion is at odds with a broader understanding of the regional dynamics. While the US has a strong military presence in the area, including a naval base in Bahrain and an air base in the United Arab Emirates, it is not clear whether the US has the capability to fully exercise control over the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been known to stage provocative maneuvers in the area, including intercepting and boarding ships that have attempted to traverse the Strait. In 2020, the US Navy conducted Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) in the region, but these operations were largely met with Iranian warnings and naval maneuvers.
Regional experts suggest that the Strait of Hormuz is inherently contested territory, with rival states and naval powers all vying for influence and dominance. “The Strait is a vital waterway, and multiple nations have a stake in maintaining its security,” said Dr. Soroush Falahi, a Middle East expert at Georgetown University. “While the US has a strong military presence in the area, it is unlikely that any one nation can claim complete control over the Strait.”
In response to President Trump’s comments, the US Department of State released a statement reiterating the US position on the Strait of Hormuz. “The United States has a long-standing commitment to maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters, including the Strait of Hormuz,” a spokesperson said. “We will continue to work with our regional partners to ensure the security of this critical waterway.”
