Taiwan has been the victim of a sophisticated cyber attack carried out by suspected Chinese hackers using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology, as per reports from the Financial Times. The AI-driven hacking campaign targeted multiple government websites, compromising crucial information and leaving officials scrambling to respond.
Between July 5th and July 9th, hackers exploited vulnerabilities in the open-source AI agents used by Taiwan’s government, exploiting a total of 21 government websites, including those of the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Mainland Affairs Council. A staggering 85 government user accounts were also compromised.
The hacking campaign’s complexity and the speed at which new vectors were created left authorities struggling to respond effectively. Despite efforts to implement counter-measures to block the AI agents, the hackers found ways to adjust their tactics as new blockades were put in place.
