Latest data indicates that the current outbreak could surpass the deadliest Ebola incident on record, surpassing the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak that claimed 11,000 lives.
Since the outbreak began in February of this year, 3,462 cases and 2,145 deaths have been confirmed in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, per statistics from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Health and the WHO. These numbers have put the international health community on high alert, as the WHO and other partners have been working closely with local authorities to control the outbreak.
The current outbreak marks the tenth Ebola epidemic to occur in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Notably, this is the second outbreak in North Kivu in just three years. The WHO has attributed the resilience of the virus to ongoing conflict, insecurity, and mobility in the region, which have hindered effective public health responses.
“We are at a critical juncture in the outbreak, and I urge the international community to continue supporting our efforts to bring this outbreak under control,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “The people of North Kivu and Ituri deserve our collective attention and action to stop this outbreak and prevent further suffering.”
The Democratic Republic of Congo has been working to scale up its response, deploying additional healthcare workers and increasing vaccination efforts. The deployment of experimental treatments and vaccines, including the Regeneron cocktail and the Merck rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine, has been accelerated. Partners, including the WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières, and the International Rescue Committee, have been providing critical support in logistics, contact tracing, and community engagement.
While some encouraging progress has been seen, concerns remain about the potential for continued transmission. To mitigate this risk, the WHO and international partners are advocating for increased community awareness and engagement, improved case detection and reporting, and enhanced preparedness measures.
The international community remains vigilant, as the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread. It remains to be seen whether efforts will be enough to prevent this outbreak from surpassing the deadliest Ebola incident on record.
