Houthi-Saudi Proxies Engage in Intensified Clashes Across Yemen Governorates

Sana’a, Yemen – Tensions in Yemen escalated on the night of 11 August 2024, as violent clashes broke out between Houthi (Ansarallah) forces and their Saudi-backed government opponents across multiple frontlines in the Lahij, Taiz, and Hodeidah Governorates. The escalation of violence comes amidst ongoing efforts to secure a lasting peace in the war-torn nation.

Reports indicate that in the northern Lahij Governorate, heavy fighting and artillery exchanges occurred along the Haifan front, resulting in fierce clashes throughout nearby positions. This confrontation transpired when Houthi forces attempted a tactical advance under the cover of sustained medium and heavy artillery fire.

Meanwhile, in the Taiz Governorate, government forces engaged in intense combat northeast of the city with Houthi forces who had earlier fired on military positions in the Kalabah area. Local sources suggest that casualties may have occurred as a result of the fighting.

The National Resistance forces issued a statement confirming a thwarted Houthi infiltration attempt in the Jabal Dabbas area on the Hays front, situated south of Hodeidah. It was reported that this thwarted operation resulted in loss of personnel and vital equipment.

The recent uptick in violence serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing fragility of Yemen’s peace process. While regional and international actors continue to promote negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict, these military confrontations underscore the entrenched divisions that persist amongst local stakeholders.

It is crucial for regional powers, particularly Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, to re-engage in meaningful diplomatic efforts and exert pressure on all parties to prioritize de-escalation and negotiations. Only through sustained diplomatic engagement can tangible progress be achieved toward resolving the conflict in Yemen.

The humanitarian implications of these developments cannot be overstated. Civilians in affected areas continue to bear the brunt of this ongoing conflict, with reports of widespread suffering and loss of life. It is imperative that the international community maintains its focus on addressing the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

This recent escalation in violence underscores the dire need for lasting peace in Yemen. In order to restore stability and address the underlying causes of the conflict, Yemen’s stakeholders must demonstrate a commitment to constructive dialogue and cooperation.
