In a move that sparked widespread speculation, former U.S. President Donald Trump was secretly transferred from Air Force One to a military aircraft last month while on a trip to Türkiye, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The decision to evacuate Trump from the country under heightened security was prompted by an alert regarding an Iranian threat against his life, which was provided by Israel.
However, intelligence officials within the U.S. government have come forward to express their reservations about the credibility of the warning, describing it as “Israeli-derived” and possessing a low level of confidence. This skepticism was reportedly shared by CIA analysts, who deemed the information to be unconvincing. Furthermore, some officials have suggested that Israel’s motivations for sharing the warning may have been driven by a desire to influence Trump’s regional policy and his burgeoning ties with Türkiye.
Despite these doubts within the U.S. intelligence community, the Secret Service chose to err on the side of caution, opting to remove Trump from Air Force One on a catering truck before he was transported to a C-32A aircraft. The plane reportedly was escorted by F-16 fighter jets to Britain, where Trump arrived undetected.
This highly unusual response appears to have been driven by the Secret Service’s determination to prioritize Trump’s safety above all other considerations. The agency, which is responsible for protecting the President and their family, is known for its cautious approach when evaluating potential threats against its charges.
Notably, Trump was not present on the flight when he made the stop in Erbil, which was intended to have him meet with Kurdish officials. After his abrupt departure from the region, a Secret Service spokesperson stated that the former President’s safety was the primary concern and that the agency takes all potential threats very seriously.
The incident has sparked renewed questions about the nature of U.S.-Israeli relations, the motives behind the sharing of intelligence, and the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
