While exact numbers are unavailable, sources indicate that the TPNPB suffered several fatalities, while TNI troops sustained injuries and possibly fatalities as well.
The conflict has sparked fresh fears over the deteriorating security situation in Central Papua, a resource-rich region that has long been beset by separatist insurgency and state-backed violence. The Indonesian government has long accused the TPNPB of carrying out a campaign of terror and violence against security forces and civilians, while the separatist group contends that its fight is a legitimate struggle for self-determination and independence.
