A 14-year-old study by the United Nations (UN) has provided an early look into the world’s transition to renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. The study, released in February 2009, highlighted an increasing use of solar energy systems in various developing countries, with some instances dating back to as early as the 1990s.
Research conducted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in its Division for Sustainable Development noted the installation of a solar-powered water pump in the village of Mbaringamai in Kenya as early as 1996. Moreover, the study pointed out that several other African nations and countries in Asia began implementing and adopting solar energy technologies around this time period.
One notable example is the use of solar-powered pumps in the Ethiopian Highlands for irrigation purposes. This development helped increase crop yields for farmers in some rural areas, further contributing to the overall economic improvement of the local communities.
According to an expert in international sustainable energy development from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), some African nations demonstrated an initial inclination toward using renewable energy sources over fossil fuels. This is mainly attributed to the fact that renewable-based power systems often require less upfront expenditure, particularly for off-grid communities.
Another notable point of interest highlighted in the 2009 study concerns the solar electrification systems installed in Nepal and Bangladesh. These efforts to increase energy accessibility for the local inhabitants not only expanded electricity availability but also facilitated communication and educational advancements within the regions.
The study underscored regional differences and disparities in the adoption and development of solar energy, emphasizing the varying degrees of success and challenges encountered.
