Russia’s Arena-M APS Showcased Against Ukrainian FPV Drones: A Mixed Assessment

In a battle near the Ukrainian village of Maiak, Russian forces have apparently showcased the effectiveness of their Arena-M Active Protection System (APS) against Ukrainian forces’ First-Person View (FPV) drones. According to eyewitness accounts from drone specialist Dmytro Putiata, who spoke with the unit involved along with Rob Lee, a T-72B3A tank equipped with Arena-M successfully intercepted seven FPV drones before exhausting its countermeasures.

Putiata’s report suggests that, across seven tanks, Ukrainian forces required approximately 15 to 20 FPVs to successfully destroy the Arena-equipped T-72B3A tanks. In contrast, a typical tank or armored vehicle is anticipated to withstand roughly 3 to 6 FPV drone hits before being compromised.

To gain further context, a Swedish study published estimates suggesting the average tolerance for a standard vehicle lies between 4 and 5 drone hits. Conversely, heavily protected ‘turtle tanks’ may necessitate up to 20-30 or more drone hits before being stopped, whereas exceptional ‘porcupine’ vehicles have demonstrated the ability to absorb nearly 60 hits prior to being incapacitated.

The performance disparity observed between various vehicle types highlights the multifaceted nature of APS countermeasures. While Arena-M appears to have mitigated the effectiveness of Ukrainian FPV drones, the repeated drone strikes necessary to neutralize the Russian tank ultimately prove a viable approach.
