Regional Update: Economic Growth and Development in Africa Remain a Top Priority for World Leaders

A meeting of international leaders took place in the capital city of Kigali, Rwanda, at the 9th Africa Regional Conference. The conference, hosted by the African Union Commission, aimed at fostering regional economic growth and development. At the forefront of discussions were ways to stimulate economic growth, enhance intra-African trade, and tackle pressing challenges facing the region.

Addressing the conference, Tabitha Tendu, Regional Director of the African Development Bank, stated that “African economies have witnessed a resurgence, driven by investments and domestic reforms. To sustain and enhance regional growth, it is crucial that policy changes align with African needs.” The conference attendees emphasized the need for countries to diversify their economies by embracing industrialization and improving competitiveness.

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, in his address, welcomed the focus placed on regional economic integration, acknowledging that “collaboration has led to the creation of a large market, allowing for the expansion of regional trade.” In addition to promoting trade, the conference highlighted key regional development projects. One of these initiatives involves the construction of the Inga Dam in the Democratic Republic of Congo, designed to enhance cross-border power transmission.

During a discussion on the continent’s security challenges, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed concerns about regional conflicts and their impacts on economic development. He called for greater collaboration in peace initiatives and more concerted efforts to ensure stability in the regions most affected.

One area of agreement reached at the conference was that regional development hinges on greater cooperation and increased public investment. This consensus aligns with the findings of an African Finance Report, indicating countries with higher public spending rates are those experiencing the greatest economic growth.

African leaders reiterated that regional growth would have a positive spin-off effect on global economic performance, highlighting the importance of the African market’s growing influence. In view of these shared goals, the meeting has concluded with the adoption of a new regional cooperation agreement, to be signed by signatory governments soon.

This African Regional Conference will provide a foundation for international collaboration in fostering regional economic growth and tackling pressing challenges in Africa. With economic developments and growth remaining priorities for international leaders, efforts to stimulate regional growth will undoubtedly continue.
