Khartoum, Sudan – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a key faction in the ongoing conflict in Sudan, has launched a series of counterattacks across the country aimed at reversing gains made by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) over the past few weeks. The RSF’s recent actions, which have seen the group capture strategic towns, conduct aerial strikes on SAF-controlled population centers, and launch large-scale assaults on SAF positions, underscore the escalation of hostilities in the region.
In Blue Nile state, the RSF has captured key towns along the Ethiopian border, marking a significant shift in momentum in favor of the RSF. Furthermore, the RSF has targeted SAF positions along major highways near the SAF’s headquarters in central Sudan. Specific attacks were launched on SAF positions north, south, and west of el Obeid, the SAF’s central command center. While the SAF has managed to repel several RSF attacks, including a large-scale assault on Jabrat al Sheikh approximately 105 miles north of el Obeid, the RSF’s sustained efforts to wear down the SAF’s defenses are beginning to yield dividends. The ongoing campaign has raised concerns about the potential for further escalation and possible humanitarian crises, with several towns and cities across the country bracing for impact.
