The majority, roughly around 1.2 million, are housed in refugee camps located within Syria, a country that is itself going through significant instability.
Furthermore, there are also concerns about the long term viability of these camps. Conditions within the refugee camps are often described as dire and many are left without sufficient access to medical care, clean water or adequate shelter. Moreover, these camps often lack adequate sanitation facilities, increasing the risk of the spread of diseases.
Humanitarian groups, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), have issued a joint statement expressing deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Iraq. In an urgent appeal for support, the groups emphasized the importance of providing immediate assistance to those affected.
The Iraqi government has acknowledged its responsibility to resolve the displacement crisis by facilitating the repatriation of the displaced citizens. However, in order to achieve this goal, more resources need to be allocated towards addressing key issues such as lack of housing, unemployment and social services.
