A series of ballistic missile and drone attacks by the Houthi movement, also known as Ansarallah, has severely impacted the city of Mokha in southwestern Yemen, which is under the control of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a key regional ally of the United Arab Emirates. The attack, which took place in the early hours of the morning, resulted in significant damage to critical infrastructure, including the seaport, which serves as a vital economic hub for international trade.
Aerial footage of the aftermath of the attack, obtained by news agencies, reveal extensive destruction and chaos in the affected areas. Reports from eyewitnesses and local authorities indicate that several buildings, including warehouses and administrative facilities, have been severely damaged or destroyed, leaving many without access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical care.
“This attack is a clear indication of the Houthis’ disregard for international law and the humanitarian principles that protect civilians in conflict zones,” said a spokesperson for the STC, condemning the attack. “We urge the international community to take immediate action to hold the Houthis accountable for their actions and to provide essential support to the people of Mokha, who are bearing the brunt of this conflict.”
The Houthi movement, which has been embroiled in a long-running conflict with the internationally recognized government of Yemen, has stepped up its military efforts in recent weeks, launching a string of attacks on strategic targets, including military installations and critical infrastructure.
The escalation of the conflict has raised concerns among regional and international actors, who fear that the situation in Yemen could spiral further out of control, exacerbating already dire humanitarian conditions. According to the United Nations, Yemen is suffering from one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 14 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and 3.5 million at risk of famine.
As the situation in Mokha continues to unfold, officials are working to assess the full extent of the damage and to provide emergency assistance to those affected. The international community is also ramping up pressure on all parties to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and pushed millions to the brink of disaster.
In the meantime, the STC has urged the Houthi movement to immediately cease all hostilities and engage in a constructive dialogue to resolve their differences through peaceful means. The movement has yet to respond to these calls, however, and the situation in southwestern Yemen remains volatile, with ongoing fighting and attacks causing widespread devastation and human suffering.
