In a highly publicized and contentious issue that has drawn international attention, Iran has formally complained to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) regarding the prolonged detention of three Iranian Su-24 pilots by Qatar. The pilots, identified as Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Omran Behrushian, were shot down by Qatari air defenses in March while returning to Iran from a bombing raid on a US base in Doha.
According to the Iranian Army, four Su-24 aircraft were involved in the raid, and all pilots successfully ejected from their planes after suffering damages sustained by Qatari defense systems. However, six months have now passed, and despite repeated calls, Qatar has allegedly not allowed the three detained pilots to contact their families or the ICRC.
Iran’s military has urged Qatar to immediately comply with the Geneva Conventions and grant the captured pilots the rights and protections afforded to prisoners of war. The Iranian Army has maintained that these basic rights, as outlined in the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, have been consistently disregarded.
“The prolonged detention of our pilots is a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law,” said an Iranian Army spokesperson. “We expect Qatar to adhere to the Geneva Conventions and treat our detained personnel with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
The Iranian government has called upon the relevant international organizations, including the ICRC, to intervene in the matter and urge Qatar to release the three detained pilots. The move is seen as a significant escalation of tensions between Iran and Qatar, which have been strained for years due to various geopolitical differences and competing interests in the region.
Qatar has not made any official comments on the allegations or provided any details on the detention of the Iranian pilots. The ICRC, however, has confirmed receipt of the complaint and has stated that they are working to facilitate contact between the detained pilots and their families.
As diplomatic channels continue to be explored, the international community remains closely watching the situation for further developments. The fate of the three detained Iranian pilots hangs in the balance, with their release hanging precariously in the balance of diplomatic efforts.
