In a recent statement that triggered a flurry of reactions from Iranian officials, the Commander of the Iran Army, Brigadier General Amir Hatami, lambasted US claims that President Donald Trump intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz as part of the United States. The statement, which some interpreted as a genuine intention to revise international maritime boundaries, has been widely condemned by Iranian officials who see it as a brazen attempt to assert American dominance in the region.
According to Hatami, the idea is “gravely mistaken” and amounts to making “serious mistakes.” The Commander’s statement appears to have been reinforced by the Iranian Foreign Ministry, which has issued a stern warning to the US to desist from making such pronouncements.
The dispute centers around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway at the mouth of the Persian Gulf that connects the region to the open ocean. The strait is critical to global energy markets as a significant portion of the world’s oil shipments passes through its waters. Historically, the strait has been governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which establishes the principles of maritime jurisdiction.
However, the Iranian Army Commander made it clear that his country will never permit a return to a situation where the US maintains a significant presence in the region. “America has practically been removed, and they no longer have permission to enter the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, or the Strait of Hormuz,” Hatami declared.
The commander’s stance is backed by a sense of Iranian national pride and resentment towards past US interventions in the region. The current US administration has taken a tough stance on Iran, imposing economic sanctions and designating the country’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. In response, Tehran has hardened its positions on key regional issues, including the straits.
The situation has sparked widespread concern in international circles, with diplomats and analysts urging restraint from all parties. While US officials have attempted to downplay the controversy, indicating that Trump was “just joking,” the damage may already be done, given the strong reaction from Iranian leaders and their emphasis on not being willing to engage in further talks with the United States.
