A relief wave has washed over Saudi Arabia’s southwestern province of Jazan following the lifting of a high alert issued earlier this week, after a significant fire at an electricity substation was brought under control. The blaze, which started at a 500/132 kV substation, caused power outages and air quality concerns in the region.
According to eyewitnesses, thick plumes of smoke poured into the atmosphere, triggering a mass evacuation of residents from the affected areas. Local authorities subsequently issued a high alert, warning citizens to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities to mitigate exposure to possible health risks associated with the smoke.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and after a long and tiring firefighting effort, the blaze was finally extinguished. Saudi Electricity Company, in collaboration with relevant authorities, successfully brought the situation under control.
Following the containment of the fire, authorities conducted extensive assessments of air quality in the area, monitoring levels of particulate matter in particular. Based on these findings, a high alert was subsequently lifted, allowing citizens to resume their normal daily routines.
“Everyone’s relief is palpable, and we appreciate the diligence of our emergency responders, who worked tirelessly to mitigate the risks associated with this situation,” stated an official from the Saudi Ministry of Interior.
Regional residents have expressed gratitude towards the quick response and efforts made to protect their health and safety. Local hospitals reported an increase in patients seeking treatment for respiratory issues and other health concerns linked to air quality, emphasizing the critical need for swift intervention.
The Ministry of Interior announced that those affected by the fire and subsequent health implications would be offered compensation, with procedures for seeking support already in place. A thorough investigation into the cause of the substation fire is currently underway, with results expected to be released at a later stage.
With the high alert now lifted, Saudi Arabia’s Jazan Province can begin its journey towards recovery and normalcy.
