The Gaza-based militant group Hamas has expressed its gratitude and admiration for the recent demonstrations held in Syria in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and against Israel’s proposed law to reintroduce the death penalty.
According to Alqassam Brigades’ spokesman Abu Ubaidah, the Syrian people’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause has sent a strong message to the international community. In a statement, Abu Ubaidah praised the bravery and resilience of the Syrian masses, who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to the resistance against Israeli occupation.
“We salute the brave people of Syria and their masses who have come out to chant for resistance and in support of Al-Aqsa and the prisoners,” Abu Ubaidah said in a statement. “We say to them: We have heard your voices, and we are proud of you. Our hopes are pinned on you and all the free people, after God.”
The recent demonstrations in Syria were held in support of Palestinian prisoners, who are currently facing the possibility of being sentenced to death in Israeli courts. The proposed law, which has been met with widespread criticism, aims to reintroduce the death penalty for serious crimes committed during times of war.
However, human rights groups and international organizations have raised concerns that the law could be used as a tool for collective punishment against Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas has long advocated for the rights of Palestinian prisoners, who have been held in Israeli detention centers for extended periods without trial or conviction.
The group’s leader, Ismail Haniyeh, recently expressed his support for the Syrian people’s right to self-determination and freedom from foreign occupation.
“This is a strong message of unity and solidarity with the Palestinian people,” Haniyeh said in a statement. “We call on all free people around the world to stand in support of the Syrian people and their struggle for freedom and self-determination.”
