**Middle East Eyes Alternative Oil Pipeline Routes Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions**

The Gulf region is witnessing a renewed push for diversifying oil transportation infrastructure, with several countries exploring new pipeline projects to bypass the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. Tensions in the region have sparked the need for alternative routes to ensure uninterrupted oil supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, is a major chokepoint for crude oil shipments. Its importance is compounded by its geography, with Iran and the US locked in a longstanding military standoff in the region. In 2020, the US nearly escalated into war with Iran after the Pentagon’s decision to assassinate a top Iranian general.

To mitigate the risks associated with this critical waterway, countries in the region are investing significantly in developing new pipeline infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has already taken the lead by expanding its existing East-West pipeline project. The initiative will enable the transport of oil from the kingdom’s eastern oil fields directly to the port city of Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Other regional players, including the UAE and Oman, are considering launching new pipeline projects to provide a similar route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. The aim is to increase the efficiency and security of oil transportation between the two countries by circumventing the congested waterway.

**What the experts say**

“The Strait of Hormuz will continue to be an essential route for oil shipments, but countries in the region are recognizing the importance of having diverse and secure supply routes in place,” said a senior energy analyst who wished to remain anonymous. “By investing in pipeline infrastructure, these countries are not only ensuring their economic stability but also safeguarding their energy security.”

While the plans are still in the early stages, they underscore the commitment of Gulf countries to mitigating risks associated with oil transportation in the high-stakes Strait of Hormuz.
