AEROSPACE DEFENSE SYSTEMS INadequate AGAINST RECENT SURGE IN MANPAD ATTACKS

In recent weeks, several high-profile military and commercial aircraft have been struck by surface-to-air missiles, specifically Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS). Despite the escalating threat, experts are highlighting the ineffectiveness of existing defense systems in protecting against these types of attacks.

MANPADS are designed to be lightweight, portable, and easy to use, making them a significant concern for military and civilian aircrews worldwide. The recent upsurge in MANPAD attacks has sparked widespread worry over the inadequacy of current aerial defense systems.

Multiple sources have confirmed that several high-profile aircraft have been targeted and damaged by MANPADS. These incidents highlight the urgent need for more effective countermeasures. While the primary purpose of MANPADS is to bring down aircraft, the recent spate of attacks has demonstrated that even military aircraft, equipped with advanced defense systems, can be vulnerable to MANPADs.

Experts have long recognized that MANPADS are a potent threat, capable of penetrating even the most advanced air defense systems. The issue, therefore, lies in the inadequacy of existing countermeasures rather than the capabilities of MANPADS.

The escalating threat posed by MANPADS requires urgent innovation and investment in more effective defense systems. To counter the evolving threats from MANPADS, the development of advanced radar systems and active defense systems capable of detecting and intercepting MANPADs at close range and low altitude is essential.

Moreover, military forces and defense contractors must accelerate the development of more effective countermeasures, incorporating advanced technologies such as directed energy systems and electronic warfare capabilities. Until such solutions become available, aircraft crews and air defense units will continue to be vulnerable to MANPAD attacks.

Policymakers and defense strategists will need to give top priority to countering this threat and to implementing effective air defenses capable of protecting aircraft against MANPAD attacks.
