The British government has announced plans to deploy its highly effective Rapid Sentry air defence system to Kuwait in response to a recent Iranian drone attack on a major oil refinery. The decision, taken after a meeting between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah, aims to bolster security for British and Kuwaiti interests in the Gulf region.
The Rapid Sentry system, specifically designed for short-range air defence (SHORAD), will be tasked with intercepting hostile drones and low-flying threats. Having proven its capabilities in Erbil, where it has been deployed in the past, the Kuwait deployment is likely to serve as a deterrent against similar Iranian drone attacks.
“This reckless drone strike on a Kuwaiti oil refinery is an unacceptable escalation of Iranian aggression,” Prime Minister Starmer stated after discussing the deployment with Kuwait’s Crown Prince. “We have a duty to protect our nationals and allies in the region, and this move demonstrates our commitment to regional security.”
The move comes as tensions between Iran and Western powers continue to simmer, with multiple incidents in recent months highlighting the threat posed by Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
