A recent investigation by the Wall Street Journal has revealed a more extensive extent of damage caused by a drone strike on the United States Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last month. Initially reported as a minor incident, evidence now suggests that multiple floors, including a secure section of the compound, were severely impacted by the attack.
On the evening of what is now reported to be late February, a total of two drones struck the highly fortified United States Embassy, located in the heart of the Saudi capital. Officials from the U.S. government revealed that the compound, while generally well-guarded, may have been particularly vulnerable during the nighttime attack. If the assault had taken place during business hours, U.S. Embassy staff, along with countless locals in the surrounding area, could have encountered serious harm, according to officials.
A total of two drones, confirmed to be of Iranian provenance, successfully breached the U.S. security perimeter and delivered the strike on multiple, heavily fortified levels of the compound. Furthermore, a number of additional drones were shot down, as well as shrapnel and debris that rained down from the air in the neighboring areas. These intercepted drones, although they did not damage the main compound, still posed a significant threat in their vicinity.
According to several U.S. officials, it is likely that the extent of damage initially reported had been downplayed. They have expressed the possibility that Iranian-backed groups had planned the assault on the U.S. Embassy as a major operation, in which case, they could have easily led to mass casualties on the premises.
This recent revelation adds an element of concern to the current relations between the United States and Iran, with ongoing tensions escalating rapidly in recent months. Washington and Riyadh have condemned the drone attack in public and urged all nations involved to take decisive action in condemning such acts of terrorism.
The latest development on this matter may lead to a wider response from Western nations against Iranian-supported groups. It remains to be seen whether any diplomatic or punitive measures will follow, considering Iran’s alleged hand in the attack.
