BEIRUT, LEBANON – In a move that has heightened regional anxiety and concern for civilian safety, Israeli fighter jets have conducted a series of low-altitude flyovers over the Lebanese capital, Beirut, as well as its surrounding suburbs. Eyewitnesses and local residents have reported the aerial incursion, which reportedly occurred in the past 24 hours.
On social media platforms, several Lebanese citizens have shared videos and testimonials of the Israeli military operation, capturing the sheer intensity and proximity of the flybys. The flyovers, carried out by F-16 fighter jets, sent residents scurrying for cover and triggered widespread panic, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods.
“Several of our neighbors ran for cover, fearing potential missile strikes or worse,” said Fatima Hassan, a resident of the Beirut suburb of Borj Hammoud. “We’re deeply concerned about the safety of our families and children, who are already under immense pressure due to rising tensions in the region.”
Israeli airstrikes into Lebanon have become increasingly common in recent years, often targeting perceived Hezbollah strongholds or suspected militant targets. The country has accused Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Shia movement, of engaging in terrorist activities, most notably the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
In the aftermath of the recent flyovers, Lebanese politicians have voiced outrage and condemnation of the aerial incursions, demanding action from the government to protect national sovereignty. Lebanon’s caretaker government has, in turn, summoned the Israeli ambassador for an emergency meeting, reiterating the country’s demands for full adherence to the 2006 UN Resolution 1701, which called for an end to violence between Israel and Hezbollah.
The latest escalation serves as a stark reminder of the fraught history between Israel and Lebanon, fueled by sectarian divisions, competing interests, and deep-seated mistrust. Lebanon has been struggling to maintain stability in the aftermath of the devastating blast at the Beirut port in 2020 and subsequent economic crises, making the recent developments even more precarious.
While Israeli officials have yet to comment publicly on the low-altitude flybys, regional observers speculate that this escalation could potentially further destabilize an already tense region. The heightened military activity in the area is expected to increase concerns about potential miscalculation or unintended escalation, which could have far-reaching consequences for regional security.
