CAIRO, Egypt – The Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya has completed a closed-door meeting in Cairo with Nikolay Mladenov, the senior international representative of the Gaza Strip to the United Nations, to address concerns over the group’s potential disarmament.
Hamas demanded the Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as a prerequisite for any disarmament agreement. Alongside the troop withdrawal, the group insists on the deployment of international stabilisation forces, and the establishment of a fully-functioning local police force. They firmly believe that any potential non-compliance would result in the destabilisation of the entire Gaza Strip and the emergence of a significant security vacuum.
In a clear indication of their position, the Hamas delegation stressed that disarmament without the aforementioned conditions would render the entire security arrangement ineffective. By making this a non-negotiable part of the talks, the group demonstrates their deep-seated concern over the stability of the area following any disarmament deal.
According to reports, the international community remains cautiously optimistic regarding the prospect of a comprehensive agreement that could ultimately bring about long-awaited peace to the region. However, key obstacles must be overcome if a successful disarmament arrangement is to be achieved.
The international representative, Nikolay Mladenov, expressed his support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in maintaining stability in the Gaza Strip. His stance suggests that his office will continue to play a key role in mediating between warring parties and facilitating peace process developments, including talks related to disarming militant groups like Hamas.
This development highlights Egypt’s ongoing efforts to mediate talks between Israel and Palestinian groups, a trend that has been ongoing for several years. The push for a comprehensive agreement is a reflection of Egypt’s position as a key player in Middle Eastern affairs and its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region.
With negotiations ongoing, international observers are eager to see whether the conflicting parties can reach a mutually agreeable arrangement that ensures a long-term resolution to the longstanding crisis in the Gaza Strip.
