Iran Blames Israel-U.S. for Attacks on Nuclear Plant, Petrochemical Facilities

In a strongly-worded statement, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has accused Israel and the United States of orchestrating a series of attacks on various Iranian infrastructure facilities, including the country’s Bushehr nuclear power plant.

Speaking publicly, Minister Araghchi drew comparisons between the alleged Israeli-U.S. aggression and previous condemnations levied against Russia over hostilities near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. Iran’s top diplomat highlighted what he described as a stark double standard in international responses to similar incidents.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that the attacks on the Bushehr nuclear plant, as well as other petrochemical facilities in the country, had not been adequately addressed by the international community. Specifically, he emphasized that if radioactivity from these facilities were to be dispersed, the repercussions would primarily impact neighboring countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as opposed to Iran itself due to prevailing wind patterns.

“The Western outrage over hostilities near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is understandable,” Minister Araghchi said, “But we’ve witnessed Israel-U.S. attacks on our Bushehr nuclear plant on four separate occasions. Radioactive fallout from these incidents would undoubtedly have devastating consequences for GCC capitals, not Teheran.”

Furthermore, Iran’s Foreign Minister argued that strikes against the country’s petrochemical facilities serve a distinct objective, hinting that these actions may be aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to export oil and engage in regional trade.

Iran’s accusations against Israel and the United States follow recent escalations in U.S.-Iran relations under the Biden administration, particularly in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear deal. This move has been followed by a series of alleged Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military targets.

The situation remains fluid as international actors continue to grapple with Iran’s nuclear program and escalating regional tensions in the Middle East.
