Yemen Conflict Escalates as Pro-UAE Backed Protest Turns Deadly in Al-Mukalla

Tensions in eastern Yemen reached a boiling point yesterday as a protest by the Southern Transitional Council (STC), backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), turned violent in al-Mukalla, the capital of Hadhramaut Governorate. According to reports from the region, the situation escalated after the Saudi-backed Yemeni Homeland Shield Forces opened fire on the crowds gathered in the city’s central square.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and intense, with soldiers firing live ammunition at protesters, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. The protesters, who were marching to demand greater autonomy and recognition for the STC, were met with a fierce response from the Homeland Shield Forces, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation from STC supporters.

“It was a horrific scene,” said an eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous. “Soldiers were shooting at unarmed civilians, and it seemed like they were trying to suppress any form of dissent.”

The conflict in Yemen, which began in 2015, has become increasingly complex, with various factions vying for power and influence. The STC, which has been pushing for greater autonomy and recognition, has received significant backing from the UAE, while the Saudi-backed government has accused the STC of attempting to secede from the rest of the country.

The attack on the STC protesters has been widely condemned by human rights groups and international organizations, who have called for an immediate end to the violence and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. “The use of force against peaceful protesters is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately,” said a spokesperson for the United Nations.

The situation in eastern Yemen remains volatile, with reports of continued violence and instability. The STC has vowed to continue its protests and demands for greater autonomy, while the Saudi-backed government has vowed to restore order and maintain control over the region.

As the situation continues to deteriorate, regional powers, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are facing increased scrutiny and pressure to resolve the conflict peacefully. The international community is closely watching developments in Yemen, with many calling for a return to diplomatic talks and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The death toll and number of injuries continue to rise as the situation remains fluid, and the humanitarian consequences of the conflict are becoming increasingly severe. With the situation showing no signs of improvement, the international community is urging all parties to exercise restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue to bring an end to the violence and restore peace to the region.
