A senior Republican congressman from the United States has urged the Iranian regime to take the statements of former President Donald Trump seriously, following recent tensions in the region.
Speaking to Al Jazeera in an exclusive interview, Congressman Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said that Trump was “a man who means what he says” and advised the Iranian regime to listen to his warnings.
“We have to take a very strong position in the region, especially with regards to the threats from Iran,” Mills said. “I advise the Iranian regime to listen to President Trump and other international leaders who are warning them not to engage in hostile activities.”
Trump has long been a vocal critic of the Iranian regime, particularly with regards to its nuclear program and ballistic missile development. His administration had imposed harsh sanctions on Tehran, exacerbating the economic crisis affecting the country.
The tensions have escalated in recent weeks, particularly after a mysterious fire at an Iranian nuclear facility last weekend. Although officials in the United States and Iran have avoided direct responsibility for the incident, Mills believes that the warning signs are clear.
“The Iranian regime is a major destabilizing force in the region,” Mills said. “They’re developing ballistic missiles and nuclear capabilities, which could pose a direct threat to our security and the security of our allies in the region.”
The US has been working closely with its allies in the Middle East to counter Iranian actions. Mills praised the Biden administration’s efforts to strengthen the alliance, citing military sales and diplomatic visits to the region.
However, Mills also emphasized the need for stronger action against Iran, citing “credible intelligence” of its military activities in the region.
“We need to take action against Iran, not just through diplomacy and sanctions, but through military action if required,” Mills said. “That’s why I support strengthening our military capabilities and working with our allies to counter Iranian aggression.”
Mills’ comments have sparked reactions from both sides, with some arguing that his comments could escalate tensions further. But others see his words as a much-needed reminder of the US commitment to regional stability.
“The Iranian regime needs to understand that the United States will not tolerate their provocative behavior,” Mills said. “And I advise them to listen to President Trump and other leaders who are warning them of the consequences of their actions.”
The US and Iran have been at odds over the years, with the nuclear agreement signed in 2015 being the most significant point of contention. Although Mills did not comment directly on the agreement, he emphasized the need for a stronger position in the region to address Iranian aggression.
As tensions continue to simmer, the international community is on high alert, watching closely for any signs of escalation. Mills’ comments, however, serve as a reminder that the United States will not back down in the face of Iranian aggression.
