In a coordinated and surprise military assault, US and Israeli forces launched a substantial aerial bombing campaign targeting multiple cities across Iran Wednesday morning. The operation, which appears to be one of the largest of its kind in recent history, has brought widespread destruction and loss of life to numerous urban centers and strategic infrastructure.
According to military sources, the attack involved a series of precision-guided missile strikes and bomber sorties conducted by US and Israeli fighter jets and bombers. The targets, which span the entire breadth of the country, included major population centers, military bases, and industrial facilities.
Eyewitnesses in Tehran report a series of heavy explosions throughout the city, with multiple buildings reduced to rubble and fires raging uncontrolled. Eyewitnesses in Karaj, a city northwest of Tehran, described scenes of chaos as buildings were bombed and civilians fled for their lives.
“It was like the end of the world,” said one Karaj resident, who asked to remain anonymous. “Bombs were falling everywhere. I saw families running from their homes, screaming for their children. It was absolute chaos.”
In addition to Tehran and Karaj, other cities affected by the bombing campaign include Ardabil, Zanjan, Miyaneh, Mahabad, Ilam, Borujerd, Shushtar, Izeh, Bushehr, Bandar Kangan, Bandar Abbas, Hajiabad, Sirjan, Iranshahr, Jiroft, Rafsanjan, Qom, and Saveh. The full extent of the destruction and loss of life is still unclear.
US and Israeli officials have yet to issue an official statement regarding the operation, but informed sources suggest that the attack is designed to weaken Iran’s military capabilities and disrupt its ability to support terror groups operating in the region.
“Iran’s persistent pursuit of a nuclear program and its continued sponsorship of international terrorism necessitate a strong and decisive response,” said an unnamed US official. “This operation has been designed to inflict significant damage and disruption upon the Iranian regime.”
As the operation unfolds, concern is growing among international diplomats and observers regarding the potential for conflict escalation and regional destabilization.
“This operation risks drawing in multiple countries and could potentially destabilize the entire Middle East,” said a senior European diplomat, who also spoke on condition of anonymity. “We urge all parties to exercise restraint and seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict.”
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis.
