The United Arab Emirates is willing to join a US- led effort to “secure” the Strait of Hormuz, a major waterway that connects the Middle East to global markets, UAE’s presidential adviser, Dr. Anwar Gargash, has announced.
According to reports, the UAE will provide logistical support for the security initiative, which aims to counter threats from Iran and other entities in the region. This development comes as tensions between the United States, Iran, and Gulf states have increased in recent months.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is a strategic shipping route that carries approximately 20% of the world’s oil exports. Any disruption to the waterway would have significant implications for the global energy market.
Dr. Gargash emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in maintaining the security of the Strait, stating that “the UAE believes in the importance of collective security in the face of regional threats.” He further underscored the UAE’s commitment to the stability of the region and its determination to work with international partners to address the challenges posed by Iran.
The US has been increasing its military presence in the region, deploying additional troops and military equipment to key locations, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. In recent weeks, Washington has also stepped up its efforts to isolate Iran economically, imposing fresh sanctions on the Iranian oil sector.
The involvement of the UAE in the US-led effort is seen as a significant development, as the Gulf state has been a key player in regional diplomacy in recent years. Analysts believe that the UAE’s decision to join the security initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its ties with the US and other Western countries.
“The UAE’s participation in the security effort highlights the country’s commitment to regional stability and its desire to work closely with international partners,” said Dr. Theodore Karasik, a security analyst based in Dubai.
The initiative to “secure” the Strait of Hormuz has been welcomed by other Gulf states, with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain expressing support for the effort. The deployment of additional military forces and equipment to the region is expected to continue in the coming months.
In a statement, a US Department of Defense spokesperson said, “The security of the Strait of Hormuz is a top priority for the United States, and we appreciate the continued support of our partners in the region.”
The UAE’s decision to join the US-led effort is seen as a significant development in the ongoing efforts to maintain regional stability in the face of threats from Iran and other entities.
