Haifa, Israel – A series of electrical accidents occurred in Haifa, a coastal city in northern Israel, on Tuesday evening, leaving multiple individuals injured. The incidents were reported across several neighborhoods, prompting an immediate response from the Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster, and blood bank service.
According to initial reports, the electrical accidents were caused by a combination of factors, including strong winds and damaged power infrastructure. Eyewitnesses described hearing loud explosions and seeing flames erupting from electrical poles and overhead cables.
“We were at home when we heard the loud bang,” said Sarah Cohen, a resident of the Ahuza neighborhood. “I looked out the window and saw a huge flame. The power was out, and we were unable to leave our house for some time.”
The MDA reported that paramedics were dispatched to multiple locations across Haifa, where they treated a total of 17 individuals for injuries ranging from moderate to severe. Several individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, including the Rambam Health Care Campus, for further treatment.
“We are working to stabilize the situation and ensure the public’s safety,” said Yonatan Gertner, an MDA spokesperson. “Our teams are on hand to provide medical assistance and provide support to those affected by the electrical accidents.”
The Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) has been working to restore power to affected areas, with crews repairing damaged infrastructure and re-establishing electricity supplies. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid approaching damaged electrical equipment.
The Haifa municipality has set up a temporary emergency center, where residents can receive information and support. Mayor of Haifa, Yonatan Yagbo, has promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the electrical accidents, with a focus on preventing similar incidents in the future.
“The safety of our residents is our top priority,” said Mayor Yagbo. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and upgrading the country’s power infrastructure, particularly in areas prone to strong winds and other environmental factors. The Israeli government has pledged to allocate additional resources to address the issue, with a focus on bolstering the country’s resilience to extreme weather events.
As the situation continues to unfold, the MDA and other emergency services remain on high alert, working tirelessly to support those affected by the electrical accidents.
