KYIV, Ukraine – Ukraine has made significant territorial gains since late January, its army chief announced today, as the country struggles to repel a massive Russian push across its eastern and southeastern borders. Despite the ongoing 1,200 km frontline assault launched by Russia, Ukraine’s military has reportedly retaken around 480 square kilometers of previously occupied land and secured 12 settlements in areas that have been a focal point of the conflict.
According to Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s army chief, the recent territorial gains signal a shifting balance in the ongoing battle for control of Ukraine’s territories. While acknowledging the ferocity of the ongoing Russian assault, which has seen Russian forces advancing up to 50 kilometers north of the city of Bakhmut in recent weeks, Syrskyi’s comments suggest that Ukrainian forces are adapting and adapting successfully to Russian military strategy.
“We have retook control of several settlements and areas that had been previously occupied by Russian forces, and that is a significant development,” Syrskyi said during a press briefing in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
Syrskyi’s comments were made in direct response to recent reports of Russian advances, which have sparked heightened concerns about the potential fall of Bakhmut. However, while acknowledging the risks posed by Russia’s ongoing offensive, Syrskyi emphasized that the Ukrainian military remains focused on pushing back Russian forces across the conflict zone.
Recent territorial gains made by Ukrainian forces have been confirmed by international observers, who have witnessed a significant intensification of clashes in recent days. Local residents have reported increased activity in areas previously under Russian control, with some accounts suggesting that Ukrainian troops have secured key infrastructure sites, such as power plants and hospitals.
While it remains unclear whether Ukraine’s recent gains will prove a permanent shift in the balance of power in the ongoing conflict, military analysts say the Ukrainian military has made significant strides in recent weeks. “The Ukrainian military has shown a renewed determination to resist Russian advances,” said John Bolton, a former US national security advisor and prominent defense analyst. “While there are still significant challenges to come, these gains are a crucial step forward for Ukraine’s national sovereignty.”
