Iran’s Foreign Ministry Slams IAEA’s Response to Bushehr Nuclear Plant Attack

In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for its response to the recent attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant. According to Baghaei, the agency’s approach regarding the incident is “disastrous” and has effectively normalized the attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.

The attack on the Bushehr nuclear power plant took place in late 2023, leaving the facility badly damaged. The IAEA, a United Nations agency responsible for promoting peaceful use of nuclear energy, was expected to condemn the attack and fulfill its duties in accordance with international law.

However, in a move widely seen as a disappointment, the IAEA issued a statement expressing concern over the incident but stopped short of directly condemning the attack or holding those responsible accountable. This response has been viewed by many as a green light for future attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesman was scathing in his criticism, stating that the IAEA’s approach was “disastrous” and had undermined the agency’s credibility. “Instead of fulfilling its duties and condemning this action, the agency has effectively taken steps to normalize the attack on the country’s peaceful nuclear facilities,” Baghaei said.

The Iranian government has long accused the IAEA of being complicit in the West’s efforts to strangle its nuclear program through “maximum pressure” sanctions. Baghaei’s comments are likely to exacerbate tensions between Tehran and the international community.

In a thinly veiled reference to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi’s ambitions to become United Nations Secretary-General, Baghaei warned that the agency and its members must realize that their “names have been recorded by the Iranian people as part of this crime.” This suggestion that the IAEA and its officials may face popular backlash in Iran underscores the deepening divisions between Tehran and the West over the nuclear issue.

The IAEA’s response has been seen as a blow to its efforts to promote nuclear safety and security. By failing to condemn the attack, the agency has undermined its authority and legitimacy, potentially paving the way for further incidents on Iranian nuclear facilities.

The situation has significant implications for the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. As tensions between Iran and the international community continue to escalate, it is increasingly clear that a new approach is needed to address the nuclear issue. The Iranian government’s demands for an end to sanctions and recognition of its nuclear rights are unlikely to be satisfied in the near future, and the international community must be prepared for the consequences.
