Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw widespread power outages and emergency alerts go off on multiple devices Thursday evening, as a sudden surge in unidentified aerial objects swept across the region.
According to statements from the Civil Defence departments in both countries, residents reported witnessing aerial activity across multiple districts, with numerous videos and photographs shared on social media platforms depicting glowing objects in the sky. These objects, described as high-altitude drones or unidentified flying objects (UFOs), reportedly hovered above populated areas, prompting mass evacuations and swift responses from local authorities.
Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior released a public statement, confirming reports of multiple “unidentified drone sightings” and assuring citizens of their safety while emphasizing ongoing security measures.
“We advise citizens to remain vigilant, stay informed, and to cooperate with authorities if necessary. We urge citizens not to engage with or approach these objects in any way,” read the statement.
Similar responses were issued by various UAE government agencies, emphasizing citizen safety and caution.
Reports of a second incident in Bahrain, where an alleged explosion occurred near an undisclosed location, were also shared Thursday evening. However, officials at the time did not confirm the nature of the blast or its connection to the aerial incursions.
Residents within the UAE reported power cuts across the emirate of Sharjah and the capital Abu Dhabi. In response, officials issued warnings to affected residents.
Power supply disruptions were confirmed across multiple locations in Bahrain, with utility provider, Bahrain Electricity and Water Authority (BWEA), stating they were working to restore services as quickly as possible.
Regional security analysts have begun speculating about the possible motivations behind the aerial incursions. Some point to concerns over the safety of military and civil infrastructure, while others express fears that such incidents could be an escalation of tensions between rival nations.
“It would be premature to say exactly what these incidents signify, but as we know, geopolitical tensions are running high in the region,” said local defense expert Amjad Naji, emphasizing the need for further investigation and communication.
While officials have not explicitly pointed to a specific country responsible for the unidentified aerial vehicles, heightened security measures have been seen in force across major cities in both Bahrain and the UAE.
The situation remains unfolding as the international community closely monitors developments in the region.
