Paris, France – In a press conference held at the Élysée Palace, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna has emphasized France’s unwavering dedication to supporting Lebanon’s stability and development efforts. The statements come at a time when Lebanon, a country plagued by ongoing economic, social, and environmental challenges, continues to navigate its path towards recovery.
Speaking to a pool of reporters, Foreign Minister Colonna acknowledged that Lebanon’s predicaments have garnered global attention, however, she highlighted that France’s unique historical and cultural ties to the country have fostered a distinctly profound concern for its well-being. “Lebanon is not merely another country facing hardship, but it is a partner that shares a rich history, language, and cultural heritage with France,” she noted, underscoring the significance of these connections.
Since Lebanon’s independence from France in 1943, bilateral relations have been marked by extensive cooperation on a range of fronts, including education, arts, and economic development. France remains one of the largest aid donors to Lebanon, having allocated millions of euros in humanitarian aid and pledged millions more for infrastructural projects.
France’s interest in Lebanon stems from its position as a strategic location in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean, serving as a critical hub for regional trade and cooperation. Moreover, its proximity to Europe and the Middle East makes Lebanon a vital partner in efforts to maintain regional stability.
Lebanese President Emmanuel Macron has similarly spoken of the deep-rooted bond between France and Lebanon, stating that “France is not just a partner, but a friend who shares our history, our values, and our destiny.”
However, despite these sentiments of friendship and cooperation, numerous challenges persist, including a deepening economic crisis, severe power shortages, and ongoing migration issues. France continues to urge the international community to address these challenges in a collective and comprehensive manner.
To that end, Foreign Minister Colonna stressed that “lebanon’s stability is in our shared interest” and encouraged Lebanon’s leaders to embark upon meaningful reforms that would help foster genuine national reconciliation and economic rebalancing.
France’s unwavering support for Lebanon’s plight comes at a pivotal moment, signaling that the nation stands ready to tackle ongoing hurdles alongside its long-standing friend.
