BEIRUT, Lebanon – In a press conference held at the Lebanese Parliament, the Speaker Nabih Berri voiced his concern over the escalating tensions between Lebanon and Israel, warning of a potential increase in military operations.
According to the speaker, he has instructed his diplomatic team to reach out to regional countries, including Pakistan. Berri’s message to Islamabad, relayed through the Pakistani ambassador in Beirut, conveyed Lebanon’s frustration with Israel’s ongoing aggression.
In his address to the Lebanese media, the Speaker emphasized that Lebanon is fully committed to its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Berri accused Israel of violating the existing agreement between the two nations, specifically referencing the maritime border agreement reached in 2020.
As part of its strategy to assert control over the disputed oil and gas field in the Levant Basin, Israel claims Lebanon has been attempting to extract resources in the area. However, Lebanon has dismissed these claims and maintained that its drilling operations are legitimate, given the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) borders.
In this context, the Speaker of the Parliament is underlining that any form of military action by Israel in response to what it deems as “oil field intrusions” by Beirut, will result in severe escalations that could lead to a destabilization of the region.
Regional experts caution that this heightened tension, which began to build following the collapse of the 2020 US-brokered deal, could potentially have a ripple effect across the broader Middle East. The involvement of various international actors in Lebanon, particularly France, the United States, and regional players such as Turkey, has raised questions regarding their readiness to intervene should tensions reach a crisis point.
Meanwhile in Lebanon, there is a growing sense of unease among citizens who feel increasingly threatened by the rising military build-up along the border with Israel. Lebanon’s fragile economy and a looming debt crisis exacerbate the sense of vulnerability, with many ordinary citizens left to question the capacity of the government to protect its people.
In reaction to the increasing regional tensions, Lebanon’s parliament is expected to convene an emergency session to discuss the security situation and possible responses to what is being viewed as an unprecedented military threat from Israel.
