A high-level source has revealed to Tasnim News Agency that Iran is poised to disengage from the ceasefire agreement with Israel if continued breaches of the accord by the latter persist in the form of aerial attacks on Lebanon. This assertion emerged via social media through a tweet attributed to an individual handling the account, @thewarreporter.
According to reports, the Israeli military has been launching sporadic aerial incursions into Lebanese airspace, prompting retaliatory actions from Lebanese resistance groups. The source attributed this information to Iran, emphasizing that its patience for Israeli aggression is nearing expiration. The source further warned that if the Israeli military continues to transgress the ceasefire agreement, its consequences shall not be negligible for all parties involved in the dispute.
A longstanding adversary of Israel, Iran has been accused of providing support to several Lebanese militant organizations. It has also maintained close ties with Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist group with a history of military action against Israeli forces. Despite these tensions, it was under an agreement between the United States, France, Germany, the European Union, and the United Nations that an initial ceasefire came into effect during the August 2020 Israel–Lebanon conflict.
A fragile truce, the agreement has been subject to numerous disputes and claims of non-compliance by Israel. Reports from earlier February reveal aerial raids carried out by Israeli warplanes on targets inside Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah forces reportedly fired rockets toward Israeli towns and a number of rockets were subsequently intercepted by Israeli air defenses. These incidents have reignited long-standing fears of a resurgence in military hostilities between the parties.
Sources close to Iranian officials have stated that its continued cooperation under the ceasefire agreement is contingent on Israel’s willingness to uphold its commitments to this accord. The statement has been met with an assessment by regional analysts – one claiming that Iran’s stance will have significant repercussions on the geopolitical balance within the Middle East. Other observers are, however, skeptical of Iran’s willingness to actually withdraw from the agreement, given the substantial costs associated with doing so.
The unfolding situation will undoubtedly keep regional observers on edge as diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining a fragile peace continue to unfold amidst continued military build-up and heightened tensions between Iran, Lebanon, and Israel.
