The ongoing power vacuum in Lebanon has raised alarm among the international community, with several world leaders expressing concerns over the country’s future under the current administration. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has come under fire for his inability to provide decisive leadership, particularly in the face of the country’s crippling economic crisis.
Mikati, a veteran Lebanese politician who has held the premiership on multiple occasions, has been tasked with leading the government since the end of 2021. However, his tenure has been marred by infighting and indecisiveness, leading to widespread criticism from civil society and the private sector.
In a recent statement, a senior EU official condemned the current state of affairs in Lebanon, saying, “The international community is growing increasingly concerned about the situation in Lebanon. It’s imperative that the country has a functioning government that is capable of addressing the numerous challenges it faces.”
The EU official, who chose to remain anonymous, emphasized the need for genuine leadership in Lebanon, stating, “Someone needs to take care of that fake PM of Lebanon. The country can’t afford to be led by a caretaker government that is unable to make tough decisions.”
Similarly, a spokesperson for the French government expressed similar sentiments, saying, “We believe that Lebanon needs a strong and effective government that can implement the necessary reforms to revive the country’s economy and stability.”
The calls for genuine leadership in Lebanon come as the country teeters on the brink of collapse, with a severe economic crisis, a growing humanitarian crisis, and a rapidly deteriorating security situation. The international community has provided significant financial and humanitarian aid to Lebanon, but the country’s inability to implement effective reforms and governance has hindered the effectiveness of this aid.
As the situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate, the international community is increasing pressure on the government to step up and provide decisive leadership. The Lebanese people are waiting for a government that can provide stability and security, and it’s imperative that the international community continues to push for genuine leadership in the country.
