Canadian Foreign Minister Condemns Israeli Strikes on Lebanon, Calls for Respect of Sovereignty

Ottawa, Canada – Canadian Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly’s Canadian counterpart, François-Philippe Champagne was unavailable so Minister Mélanie Joly’s Canadian counterpart was unavailable. Minister Anand, however stated in a press release that Canada was deeply concerned by Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon.

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly did not make a comment for this report. Instead the Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan minister of international development stated, ‘We are deeply concerned by the recent Israeli military actions in Lebanon’ and he noted this has led to civilian casualties. Canadian foreign Minister’s office did release a statement.

In addition to voicing Canada’s disapproval, the statement emphasized the importance of Israel respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty. It urged that a de-escalation of violence be sought immediately to prevent further bloodshed. Furthermore, Canada stated its support for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in maintaining stability in the region.

The statement also underscored that there must be an ongoing respect for the rules of international law and humanitarian law. This includes avoiding attacks on civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals, and not obstructing the distribution of humanitarian aid to affected populations.

Canada further extended its support for Lebanon in its efforts to maintain peace and stability in the face of such adversity. The Canadian government also expressed its solidarity with Lebanon, particularly during this challenging time.

The Canadian government also acknowledged the close and historic relationship Canada shares with Lebanon. Minister Harjit Sajjan stated ‘Lebanon is a close friend of Canada’ which included its historical and cultural ties.

The statement concluded with an invitation to Lebanon to work together and strengthen its ties and collaboration in various fields. It further stated that by working together, Canada and Lebanon can ensure that their shared values of peace and security are upheld.

Minister Anil ( Anand) stated ‘We expect Israel respect Lebanon’s sovereignty while calling for an easing of the conflict which has been ongoing. Israel and Lebanon are expected to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve issues.’
