Iranian Delegation Meets with Pakistan’s Top Military Official in Islamabad

A high-level delegation from Iran arrived in Islamabad on Thursday, where they held talks with Pakistan’s newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir. The meeting, which is seen as a significant development in bilateral relations, comes at a time when Pakistan and Iran are seeking to strengthen their ties in various areas.

The Iranian delegation, led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, includes other prominent figures such as Ali Bagheri, the deputy foreign minister for European and American affairs; Kazem Gharibabadi, the head of the Iranian negotiating team for the Vienna talks and a senior official at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA); and Abdolnaser Hemmati, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Iran.

The delegation also included Saeed Khatibzadeh, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who has been at the forefront of Tehran’s diplomatic efforts in recent years.

According to sources, the Iranian delegation used the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest with Pakistan’s top military official, including measures to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense, security, and counter-terrorism.

The visit is also seen as an attempt by Iran to strengthen its ties with Pakistan in the wake of recent events, including the formation of a new government in Islamabad and the ongoing tensions in the region.

Sources close to the development revealed that Pakistan has shown a clear willingness to engage with Iran on key regional issues, including Afghanistan, where the two countries share a long border. Pakistan has been seeking to normalize relations with the Taliban-led government in Kabul and sees Iran as a key partner in this effort.

In recent years, Pakistan and Iran have made efforts to strengthen their economic and energy ties, including the development of the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline project. The two countries have also maintained close coordination on regional security issues, particularly with regard to the situation in Afghanistan.

The Iranian delegation’s visit to Islamabad comes at a time when Pakistan is re-evaluating its relations with key regional actors, including the United States and Saudi Arabia. The development is seen as a strategic move by Pakistan to strengthen its ties with neighboring countries, including Iran, with which it shares a 1,500 km-long border.

The successful conclusion of the talks between the Iranian delegation and General Munir is likely to have a positive impact on Pakistan-Iran relations, paving the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation in various areas.
