A Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar to then-President-elect Donald Trump in 2016 has undergone a $400 million overhaul to serve as the interim Air Force One. The aircraft, which boasts an opulent interior reminiscent of royal-family accommodations, will retain its luxurious features, albeit with some modifications.
According to WSJ sources, only Arabic-language signs and artwork were removed and replaced with U.S. presidential seals to align the aircraft with American presidential standards. The bulk of the interior remains unchanged, allowing the interim Air Force One to maintain its regal ambiance. The decision to preserve the original interior is a testament to the emphasis on speed and functionality over aesthetics in the overhaul process.
The U.S. Air Force prioritized refurbishing the communications systems, ensuring a secure and reliable platform for the president’s communications. The overhaul focused on enhancing the aircraft’s secure networking capabilities, including satellite communications and encryption systems.
The current Air Force One fleet is nearing the end of its service life, with the oldest aircraft in the fleet dating back to the 1980s. A new Air Force One is reportedly under development, but the $4.3 billion project is behind schedule. In response, the U.S. Air Force opted to refurbish the Qatar-gifted Boeing 747 to serve as an interim solution.
“We are focused on getting this done quickly, which is why we’ve taken a more practical approach to updating the interior,” a defense official said, citing the need for speed and efficiency. “The priority was to get the communications systems updated to meet modern standards, rather than focusing on redesigning the cabin.”
The interim Air Force One is set to begin service this summer, with the Qatar-gifted Boeing 747 serving as a placeholder until the new aircraft is completed. The U.S. Air Force is expected to maintain a high level of security and functionality on the aircraft, ensuring the continued safety and effectiveness of the president’s communications during flights.
As the U.S. Air Force navigates the complexities of replacing its aging Air Force One fleet, this interim solution offers a practical and cost-effective compromise. With the bulk of the luxurious interior preserved, the Qatar-gifted Boeing 747 will undoubtedly provide a unique flying environment for the president and his staff as they travel the world.
