U.S. Approves Possible $992.4 Million Sale of Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System to Israel

The U.S. Department of State has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the State of Israel of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS). According to an official announcement made by the department, the sale is valued at approximately $992.4 million.

The APKWS, a modular, inertial/GPS-guided, 2.75-inch rocket system, is designed to provide precise and accurate firepower to military forces. It is produced by the U.S. company BAE Systems, Inc., and has been used by several international militaries, including those of the United States, for the past two decades.

Details of the possible sale, which was announced on the same day to the U.S. Congress, reveal that Israel has requested the purchase of the systems, as well as related equipment and logistical support. The sale is said to enhance the Israeli military’s ground-launched, precision-guided munitions capabilities, with the aim of countering emerging threats in the region.

Under the terms of the proposed sale, Israel will be acquiring approximately 1,480 APKWS guidance units, as well as associated software, spare and repair parts, testing equipment, and logistics, sustainment, and technical support services. Additionally, the sale includes the provision of training and support to Israel’s military forces on the use and maintenance of the systems.

According to reports from the U.S. government, the proposed sale is aimed at strengthening the strategic partnership between the United States and Israel, while also promoting stability in the Middle East region. The deal is also seen as an effort to modernize the Israeli military’s capabilities, enabling them to address emerging security challenges.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the impact of the sale on the regional security dynamics, as well as the potential for the systems to be used in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Proponents, on the other hand, argue that the sale is necessary to secure Israel’s national security interests and to counter the growing threats from neighboring countries.

The U.S. Congress has been notified of the proposed sale, and a review process is now underway to determine whether to approve the deal. The State Department’s announcement underscores the significance of the proposed sale, signaling a strong commitment to Israel’s military capabilities and regional security.

In a statement to the press, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Foreign Military Sales, Dennis McGinn, noted that the proposed sale “furthers U.S. national security and foreign policy interests,” while also contributing to “regional security and stability.” McGinn added that the sale is consistent with the U.S. government’s policy of supporting the security and stability of Israel, while also promoting the growth of a strong and secure regional defense community.

The outcome of the review process is expected to be announced in the coming weeks, pending approval from the U.S. Congress.
