Lebanese Hezbollah MP Accuses Officials of Favors to US at Expense of Region’s Stability

BEIRUT, LEBANON – A fierce row has emerged within the Lebanese government as Hussein al-Haj Hassan, a high-ranking Hezbollah MP, lambasted unnamed officials for allegedly rebuffing Iranian efforts to secure a ceasefire in the volatile region. Hassan’s scathing attack was directed at those who have reportedly been seeking US intervention as a mediator.

According to Hassan, this decision is misguided and counterproductive. He criticized those officials for their seemingly unwavering loyalty to the US at a time when Lebanon is witnessing a surge in violence. Hassan specifically questioned whether these officials are cognizant of the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict, which includes an alarming number of fatalities, injuries, and widespread destruction.

“We cannot allow the excessive appeasement of one country to be at the expense of the welfare of our people,” Hassan declared. “We cannot and we should not prioritize the whims of one foreign power over the very fabric of our nation.”

The Hezbollah MP’s remarks come as the Israeli military has been conducting airstrikes and ground operations against Hezbollah and Iranian targets in southern Lebanon. The escalating situation has raised fears of a broader conflict, and Hassan’s call for an unconditional Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory has taken on added significance.

Hassan’s demands also include the return of displaced civilians, the release of prisoners, and reconstruction efforts to alleviate the suffering of Lebanese communities. However, he emphasized that any negotiations or diplomatic efforts must not involve direct communication with Israel.

The controversy surrounding Iranian mediation and US involvement in the crisis has sent shockwaves through Lebanon’s fragile political landscape. Hassan’s intervention has sparked a heated debate between government officials who are divided on the best course of action in the face of the escalating conflict.

Critics have accused Hassan of prioritizing Iran’s interests over those of the Lebanese people, while supporters see his stance as a necessary measure to protect the nation’s sovereignty and prevent US intervention that could prove catastrophic for the region.

The standoff is expected to continue in the coming days, with regional powers and international mediators struggling to stem the violence and avert a potentially devastating conflict that could spread across the Middle East.
