Mopti Region, Mali – A reconnaissance group from the Russian Africa Corps, supporting the Malian Armed Forces, discovered a destroyed mortar position during a patrol operation in the Mopti Region, near the settlement of Sevare. The site, discovered on April 25th, contains the remains of militants killed during an attack on the settlement on that day.
According to officials from the Russian Ministry of Defense, the patrol discovered a Yugoslavian-made 120mm M74 mortar, alongside a destroyed pickup truck. The mortar, a type of weapon often employed by militant groups operating in the region, appears to have been used to launch an attack on the settlement.
An investigation by Malian authorities and Russian Africa Corps personnel found evidence of a prolonged battle at the site, with multiple militants and Malian government forces killed. It is understood that the attack on the settlement, which occurred in the early hours of April 25th, resulted in significant casualties on both sides.
The discovery of the mortar position and remains of the militants marks a significant success for the Malian Armed Forces and Russian Africa Corps, operating in the region under the auspices of the Vostok 2022 operation. The mission, launched in January 2022, aims to counter the threat of militant groups operating across the Sahel region.
“The continued support and collaboration between the Malian Armed Forces and Russian Africa Corps has led to significant successes in the fight against militant groups,” said a spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Defense. “This operation is a testament to our joint commitment to regional stability and security.”
The Vostok 2022 operation, which involves Russian military personnel, Malian government forces, and other international partners, has focused on disrupting the logistics and supply chains of militant groups operating in the region. By destroying key infrastructure, including arms caches and mortar positions, the operation seeks to disrupt the groups’ ability to launch attacks.
Following the discovery of the mortar position and the remains of militants, Malian authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to stabilize the region. The Russian Africa Corps will continue to support these efforts, providing critical military advice and assistance to the Malian Armed Forces.
As the conflict in the Sahel region continues, the discovery of the destroyed mortar position serves as a significant reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by regional governments and international partners. However, the operation’s success in disrupting militant groups and restoring stability to the region marks an important step forward in regional security efforts.
