Ukraine Sees Fresh Wave of Russian Drone Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

In a continuation of Moscow’s ongoing military campaign against Ukraine’s energy sector, a barrage of Russian Geran-2 drones targeted critical infrastructure in the Odesa region this evening. The series of attacks, confirmed by multiple local sources and eyewitness reports, has led to outages and blackouts in Ilichivsk, a key city in the region.

Residents in Ilichivsk, which has a population in excess of 60,000 people, reported that the strikes caused significant disruptions to electricity supplies, prompting concerns about the resilience of Ukraine’s power grid in the face of persistent Russian aggression.

“The attack this evening hit the energy infrastructure in Ilichivsk, leaving many residents without power,” said Oleh Korolyuk, a spokesperson for the Odesa regional administration. “Our teams are working diligently to restore supplies as quickly as possible and minimize the impact on the local community.”

Separate reports indicate that a further drone strike was carried out near the city of Alexandrovka in Odesa Oblast, further exacerbating the crisis. While official details on the extent of damage are yet to emerge, officials have confirmed that energy infrastructure was targeted in both incidents.

“It’s clear that Russia is intent on weakening Ukraine’s ability to maintain critical services, including energy and healthcare,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, condemning the latest wave of attacks. “We will continue to work closely with our international partners to ensure that those responsible for these actions are held accountable.”

With Ukraine in the midst of the spring season – a time when energy consumption typically increases – the attacks have raised concerns about the ability of critical infrastructure to cope with increased demand. Amidst the heightened tensions, Ukraine’s energy sector remains vulnerable, with many residents now bracing for extended periods without power.

Ukraine’s military and defense officials have vowed to take aggressive action in response to the ongoing drone campaign, with some reports suggesting that targeted counter-measures have already been deployed to neutralize the Russian threat.

Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of engaging in a systematic campaign to attack its energy infrastructure, with previous strikes targeting key facilities across the country. These latest incidents bring the total number of drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector to over 20 in the past year.

The international community has condemned the latest wave of Russian aggression, with many countries and organizations reaffirming their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As Ukraine continues to face mounting pressure from Russia’s military actions, officials are emphasizing the need for increased international cooperation to combat these types of threats.
